Reading in the Early Years

Learning phonics in the early years is one of the biggest parts of the curriculum. Reading underpins all other areas of learning and research shows that those who read regularly achieve better in STEM subjects such as math and science.

At St Catherine's we follow "Read, Write, Inc" as a systematic scheme. For more information please visit Parent guide to Read Write Inc. Phonics - Oxford Owl

Children are assessed individually and regularly to ensure that they are making progress with their sound knowledge.

Children learn:

- Set 1 ( 25 single sounds)
- Set 1 special friends ( 2 letters that make 1 sound such as sh)
- Set 2 ( first 6 sounds)
- Set 2 ( all 12 sounds)
- Set 3

The children need to be able to read words containing taught sounds speedily, which means without having to sound and blend the words aloud.  Only once they are showing confidence at the sounds they are currently working on will your child move to the next sounds.
